A family business in St Agnes

The cottages

The cottages date from the early 1700s and were built to provide lodgings for the Harbour Master and to house the trade that St Agnes Harbour generated. The cottages remained central to this trade until the final demise of the harbour in the early 1900s.

Stunning sea views

The three comfortable and well-equipped holiday cottages are ideally positioned in the heart of a magnificent and popular cove. All have uninterrupted sea views and the sound of the surf drifts up from the beach at night like Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave.

A family business

Cove Cottages is a family-owned and family run business spanning generations. Throughout our 70 years  in business, we have been very proud to welcome so many returning guests, first with their children and now  grandchildren. We offer three holiday cottages, each based in St. Agnes overlooking Trevauance Cove on the stunning North Coast of Cornwall.

As a family we have recently been going through the archives (old trunks in the attic) and found some true delights. These little windows into the past range from weekly grocery bills in the 1920’s to adverts placed in the Daltons Weekly and The Lady. The hidden gems mostly came in the form of lovely correspondence between the guests and the family. One letter dated to the 1940’s discusses the importance of the guests remembering to bring their own linen & ration books ‘during these hard times’.

This historical correspondence between Cecile and Tom Thewlis offered an insight to their hands on approach to the enterprise. The genuine relationships they developed with their clients are evident still today as some of those young children of the yesteryear are now visiting us with their own grandchildren.

When the time came, their daughter Kay and her husband Derek took onboard the family business investing time and energy into the business.

Kay’s son Nick now helps with the family business and between mother and son they continue to strive to look at ways to improve the cottages and the overall experience for their guests.

A word from us

Living by the cottages enables us to oversee regular maintenance, we are constantly adding and improving facilities for our guests. All of the holiday cottages are on a private road overlooking the beach, with stunning views of the sea, cliffs and coastline. Across the road, steps lead down to the sandy beach of Trevaunance Cove with its rock pools and remains of the old harbour of St Agnes. Our summer flower displays and spectacular views even appear on local postcards of St Agnes!
